How a Tokyo tennis tournament evolved through decades of shifting prestige
In short: From its 1973 origins as the Toray Sillook Championships to its current status as a WTA 500-level event, the Pan Pacific Open has undergone a massive transformation. Discover how this Tokyo staple navigated name changes, venue shifts, and the complex hierarchy of professional women's tennis.
The Pan Pacific Open serves as a significant fixture in the women's professional tennis calendar, currently sponsored by Toray Industries. Since 2022, the event has been classified as a WTA 500-level tournament. Its history is marked by frequent rebranding; it began in 1973 as the Toray Sillook Championships, became the Sillook Open in 1976, the TV Championships in 1982, and the Queens Grand Prix in 1983. The current moniker, the Pan Pacific Open, has been in use since 1984. The tournament's identity has been shaped by various sponsors over the years. Currently, Toray Industries provides the primary sponsorship for the event.
The tournament's physical environment has also seen a major shift. For much of its history, it was played on indoor carpet at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. However, in 2008, the event transitioned to outdoor hard courts, moving its venue to the Ariake Coliseum. This move coincided with a period of significant structural changes within the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) hierarchy.
The tournament's prestige has fluctuated through various tiers of professional tennis. It held Tier I status from 1993 through 2008. In 2009, it was elevated to a Premier 5 tournament, but this status changed in 2014 when it was downgraded to a Premier event. This shift occurred as the Wuhan Open in Wuhan, China, took over the Premier category. Amidst these structural shifts, Martina Hingis established herself as the tournament's most successful singles player, holding the record with five titles.
