How an ancient genetic catastrophe created a world of living weapons
In short: In the post-apocalyptic world of Panzer Dragoon, humanity survives in the shadow of its own past. The 'Ancient Age' was a hyper-advanced civilization that mastered genetic engineering to create biological weapons—a pursuit that ended in a cataclysmic war and left behind a planet teeming with mutated monsters.
The lore of Panzer Dragoon centers on a world-spanning, hyper-advanced civilization known as the Ancients. Thousands of years before the games' events, these beings utilized genetic engineering to manufacture living weapons. This technological pursuit eventually triggered a cataclysmic war that nearly decimated humanity, leaving behind a scarred landscape filled with ruins and dangerous relics.
The primary threat to modern human factions is the mutated descendants of these ancient biological weapons. These creatures have merged into wild ecosystems, posing a constant danger to civilization. In response, humans have begun scavenging recovered technologies from the Ancient Age—such as ubiquitous floating military airships—to defend themselves against the mutants and wage wars against rival human factions.
The series follows a succession of protagonists who ride mysterious armored flying dragons of extraordinary power. Their mission is twofold: they must prevent various factions from reactivating the most destructive weapons of the Ancient Age, and ultimately work to destroy all remaining facilities. By dismantling these remnants of high-tech warfare, the heroes aim to finally free humanity from the lingering threat of their ancestors' hubris.
This narrative was shaped by developer Yukio Futatsugi, who drew inspiration from childhood readings like 'The Long Afternoon of Earth.' The aesthetic reflects a mix of natural and technological elements, influenced by the works of French artist Mœbius and Hayao Miyazaki’s 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.'
