The gate of Raigad: a 300-year-old trade hub reborn
In short: Nestled between Mumbai and Pune, Panvel is more than a transit point. It is a historic gateway that evolved from a medieval rice market into a massive industrial and logistical artery. Discover how this town balances its ancient heritage with its role as a modern infrastructure powerhouse.
Panvel’s identity is rooted in its geography as the 'gate of Raigad,' the first city encountered when entering the district from the west. Its development was shaped by its strategic position on land and sea trade routes during the Maratha, Mughal, British, and Portuguese eras. Historically, the town was renowned for its rice market and featured large, palace-like homes built during the Peshwa period. It even served as a military landmark, housing historic cannons during the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The town underwent significant administrative evolution, establishing the Panvel Municipal Council in 1852—the oldest municipal council in Maharashtra—before transitioning to a Municipal Corporation in 2016. Today, it serves as a critical logistical node. It is home to the Panvel sub-division, the district's largest by village count (564), and sits adjacent to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which opened in October 2025. The city acts as a primary junction where major arteries like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Bengaluru-Mumbai Highway converge.
Modern Panvel is a study in industrial scale and connectivity. It hosts major corporations including Reliance, Larsen & Toubro, and ISRO's Propellant Complex, while the nearby JNPT port fuels its economic engine. Its railway station functions as a vital terminal for the Harbour line and a refueling point for diesel locomotives bound for the Konkan Railway. While 'Old Panvel' retains a more congested, traditional layout, 'New Panvel' features wide, planned arterial roads, illustrating the city's ongoing transition from a historic trade outpost to a high-capacity urban hub.
