A new deep learning framework maps how DNA sequences control human traits
In short: Researchers have developed a computational framework called Sei to decode how specific parts of our DNA influence human health. By training a deep learning model on over 1,300 different human cell lines and tissues, the team created a way to predict how various genetic sequences and mutations function across the entire body.
This tool identifies "sequence classes," which categorize DNA based on their regulatory roles, such as how they influence gene activity in specific tissues. It helps scientists understand the complex architecture behind diseases and provides a way to generate new hypotheses about how specific mutations cause illness.
The study used a deep learning model to analyze 21,907 chromatin profiles. While the framework provides a global map of regulatory activity, its accuracy depends on the quality of the underlying genomic data used for training.
Why it matters: This tool helps scientists move from simply identifying genetic mutations to understanding the specific biological mechanisms that cause diseases.
