Combination immunotherapy shows long-term survival benefits for patients with advanced melanoma
In short: A long-term study of patients with advanced melanoma found that a combination of two immunotherapy drugs, nivolumab and ipilimumab, significantly extended survival compared to using ipilimumab alone. After a 10-year follow-up, patients receiving the combination therapy showed a median overall survival of 71.9 months, nearly double that of those receiving nivolumab alone.
Researchers conducted a randomized trial to compare three different treatment regimens for previously untreated advanced melanoma. While the study demonstrated a continued survival benefit for the combination therapy, it is limited by the fact that it only observed outcomes in a specific patient population and does not account for all possible variables in long-term cancer progression.
Why it matters: Long-term data confirms that combining specific immunotherapies can significantly extend life for patients with advanced skin cancer.
