Atrial fibrillation cases are rising globally and may become a major public health challenge
In short: A review of global health data found that the prevalence of atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder, has increased by 33% over the last 20 years. Researchers analyzing the Global Health Data Exchange observed that the worldwide incidence rate in 2017 was 31% higher than it was in 1997.
Atrial fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm disorder, raises stroke risk and carries major health and economic costs. Using global registry data from 1997 to 2017, the researchers tracked rising incidence and prevalence, then projected the overall burden could grow by more than 60% by 2050, with the fastest recent increases in middle-income countries.
This is an epidemiological analysis of existing registry data rather than a clinical trial, and its future projections rely on extending past trends, so they may not capture changes in diagnosis, treatment or healthcare systems.
Why it matters: Atrial fibrillation is becoming more common worldwide, and projections suggest the burden will keep rising for decades.
