Muscle loss linked to worsening heart conditions in older adults
In short: A review of existing research on sarcopenia—a condition marked by declining muscle strength and function—found it associated with quicker worsening of cardiovascular disease and a greater chance of death, falls, and lower quality of life, especially in older adults.
The authors describe sarcopenia as arising from an imbalance between muscle-building and muscle-breakdown processes, often worsened by aging, chronic illness, malnutrition and inactivity. Because body mass index misses patients who are both obese and sarcopenic, they suggest other screening approaches may be needed.
The review draws on existing studies rather than new data, and notes that many mechanisms and treatment options are still being worked out.
Why it matters: Spotting muscle loss early might open a window to intervene before heart problems worsen, though the evidence here is observational.
