Microplastics have permeated every corner of the natural world and human bodies
In short: A review of twenty years of research shows that microplastics—tiny plastic particles from tires, textiles, and cosmetics—are now pervasive in our environment. These pollutants are found throughout the food chain and inside the human body, with scientists warning that environmental contamination could double by 2040.
While these particles are widespread, researchers are still working to understand the full extent of their biological impact. Current evidence shows harm at multiple levels of biological organization, but more research is needed to determine how these pollutants affect human health specifically.
This review synthesized two decades of literature to refine definitions and assess current knowledge. A primary limitation is that while wide-scale harm is predicted based on contamination levels, clear evidence regarding the efficacy of specific solutions to mitigate these risks is still lacking.
Why it matters: Microplastics are now a global environmental reality, appearing in our food and bodies with potential for increasing impact.
