New software tool improves identification of uncharacterized microbes in complex environments
In short: Researchers have developed MetaPhlAn 4, a tool designed to better profile microbial communities by integrating data from both known and uncharacterized genomes. By using unique marker genes from a massive collection of over one million prokaryotic references, the method can identify species that have never been grown in a lab, capturing significantly more genetic information from environments like the human gut.
The researchers applied this method to over 24,500 metagenomes, finding that it explains much more genetic data in less-studied environments, such as the rumen, compared to previous tools. This approach even allows for the genetic profiling of individual microbial strains. However, the tool's effectiveness relies on the availability of metagenome-assembled genomes to provide the necessary reference data.
Why it matters: New computational methods can reveal the presence of previously hidden microbes that serve as important biological markers.
