Novavax vaccine shows high protection against SARS-CoV-2 in clinical trials
In short: Researchers conducting a phase 3 trial found that the NVX-CoV2373 vaccine, a recombinant nanoparticle vaccine, provided 89.7% protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study involved 15,187 participants who were randomly assigned to receive either the vaccine or a placebo, demonstrating that the two-dose regimen was both safe and effective in healthy adults.
This randomized, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that the vaccine was highly effective, even against the B.1.1.7 variant. The study observed that side effects were generally mild and temporary, with serious adverse events occurring at low rates similar to the placebo group.
The research was conducted across 33 sites in the United Kingdom. While the results are promising, the study's findings regarding efficacy were based on a specific per-protocol population of 14,039 participants.
Why it matters: The Novavax vaccine demonstrated significant efficacy and a favorable safety profile in a large-scale clinical trial.
