mRNA-1273 vaccine demonstrated 94.1% efficacy in preventing Covid-19 illness
In short: A phase 3 randomized trial of 30,420 volunteers found that the mRNA-1273 vaccine was 94.1% effective at preventing symptomatic Covid-19. The study, which followed participants at high risk for infection, observed significantly fewer cases of illness and severe disease in those who received the two-dose vaccine regimen compared to a placebo group.
The trial was conducted across 99 centers in the United States, randomly assigning participants to receive either the vaccine or a placebo. While the results showed high efficacy and a similar rate of serious adverse events between groups, the researchers noted that more frequent moderate, transient reactions to the vaccine occurred compared to the placebo group.
Why it matters: The mRNA-1273 vaccine provides high protection against symptomatic and severe Covid-19 in high-risk populations.
