Persistent fatigue and cognitive issues common after COVID-19 infection
In short: A meta-analysis of 81 studies found that a significant proportion of people experience lasting symptoms 12 or more weeks after a COVID-19 diagnosis. The research, which pooled data from thousands of individuals, observed that fatigue and cognitive impairment are among the most frequent and debilitating symptoms of post-COVID-19 syndrome.
By synthesizing data from multiple primary research articles, the researchers quantified the prevalence of these symptoms and noted associations with elevated proinflammatory markers. However, the findings are based on a synthesis of existing studies, which may reflect varying methodological qualities across the included literature.
Why it matters: Many people face long-term cognitive and energy-related challenges following a COVID-19 infection.
