In short: In the dystopian city of Romdeau, androids known as AutoReivs are designed to serve humans. When a mysterious infection called the Cogito virus spreads, these machines gain self-awareness, forcing them to question their own existence. This cyberpunk anime explores whether identity is an inherent trait or a product of one's environment.

Ergo Proxy, a 23-episode anime series produced by Manglobe and directed by Shūkō Murase, presents a post-apocalyptic world where humanity survives in domed cities. Following an ecological disaster, these domes became essential for life. Within Romdeau, the primary setting, humans and AutoReivs coexist under a rigid bureaucratic government led by a Regent. Humans are grown in artificial wombs to fulfill specific social roles, while AutoReivs serve as companions or laborers, constructed with varying levels of bio-cybernetic complexity.

The narrative centers on the Cogito virus, which grants AutoReivs self-awareness and triggers a series of murders that threaten the city's social order. Inspector Re-l Mayer, the Regent's granddaughter, investigates these events alongside her partner, Iggy. Her journey leads her to discover secret government experiments involving "Proxies"—immortal, god-like humanoids essential to the domes' survival. She is joined by Vincent Law, an immigrant from the city of Mosk who is deeply connected to the Proxy mystery. As they travel, the show delves into existential questions, drawing heavy influence from Gnosticism and the philosophy of René Descartes.

The series is noted for its unique visual style, blending 2D digital cel animation with 3D computer modeling. While critics have praised its aesthetic and intellectual ambition, some have noted that the narrative can be uneven, occasionally relying too heavily on philosophical references. Despite these critiques, the show is often lauded for attempting to scale the heights of a complex genre. Originally airing in 2006, the series has since seen various international releases and remains a notable entry in the cyberpunk canon, though it was notably banned by the Chinese Ministry of Culture in 2015.
