How a studio rose from bankruptcy to revive its legendary gaming titles
In short: After the original Telltale Games collapsed in 2018, many thought its era of episodic adventure was over. However, a new entity emerged from the ashes, acquiring key intellectual properties and promising a more sustainable, quality-focused approach to game development to avoid the pitfalls of its predecessor.
The original Telltale Games, famous for hits like the 2012 release of The Walking Dead, faced severe internal strife leading up to 2016. The studio struggled with a focus on releasing a high quantity of titles over maintaining quality, resulting in underperforming sales for hastily produced games. Following the failure of several major deals in September 2018, the company announced its immediate closure and filed for assignment in October 2018. This decline was marked by a shift in leadership during 2017 intended to prioritise quality. Ultimately, the studio's sudden shutdown forced the sale of all its remaining assets.
A new company, LCG Entertainment, Inc., was incorporated on December 27, 2018, to acquire the original studio's assets. After six months of complex negotiations with Sherwood Partners, the acquisition was completed in August 2019. Led by CEO Jamie Ottilie and CRO Brian Waddle, the new Telltale Games aimed to build a stable culture, avoiding the 'crunch time' environments and rapid growth that plagued the previous management. The company secured additional investment from figures like Chris Kingsley and Lyle Hall. Furthermore, Telltale recently obtained eight million dollars in funding from Skybound Entertainment and Hiro Capital.
The revival has seen mixed results and shifting partnerships. While the new studio secured licenses for titles like Batman and The Wolf Among Us, other major properties like The Walking Dead reverted to original owners such as Skybound Entertainment. Development on The Wolf Among Us 2 faced setbacks when AdHoc Studio, a group of former Telltale members, pulled out in 2023 due to creative control disagreements, despite having written the game's full script during prototyping. The studio continues to expand its portfolio through acquisitions, such as the recent purchase of Flavourworks. Additionally, they are currently co-developing The Expanse: A Telltale Series alongside Deck Nine.
