A political thriller's massive success sparked a stylometric literary debate
In short: When Bill Clinton released his first novel, it shattered sales records and triggered an immediate investigation into who actually wrote the prose. While the book became a commercial juggernaut, critics used linguistic data to argue that the former president might have played a smaller role than the marketing suggested.
Published in June 2018, 'The President Is Missing' by Bill Clinton and James Patterson was a commercial powerhouse. It topped the New York Times Best Seller list for several weeks, selling one million copies in North America alone by August 8, 2018. The book achieved the highest first-week sales in the adult fiction genre since 2015, moving approximately 250,000 copies across all formats in its debut week.
Despite the massive success, the novel faced significant critical scrutiny regarding its execution and authorship. While some reviewers praised its potency, others dismissed it as predictable or criticized its prose and plot absurdity. A notable point of contention arose from a stylometric analysis published in The Guardian by James O'Sullivan, which suggested that Patterson was primarily responsible for the writing.
The book's narrative centers on President Jonathan Lincoln Duncan facing a cyberterrorist threat involving a virus called 'Dark Ages.' This digital weapon, allegedly created by Nina and Augie for the group Sons of Jihad, threatened to destroy all data on internet-connected devices in the U.S. The plot highlights themes of cybersecurity, international espionage, and internal leaks, ultimately serving as a high-stakes vehicle for Clinton's transition into fiction.
The project has continued to evolve beyond the page. While Showtime initially planned an ongoing drama series, the pandemic halted production in October 2020. More recently, reports from January 2026 indicate a film adaptation is in development with Halle Berry slated to play a gender-swapped version of the protagonist.
