How a fake debut novel by a famous author was unmasked by linguistic analysis
In short: When The Cuckoo's Calling was published in 2013 under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, critics praised its assured tone. Yet, the mystery of the author's identity was eventually solved not just by a social media leak, but by sophisticated software programs designed to compare writing styles across different literary works.
The Cuckoo's Calling, released on 4 April 2013, was presented as the debut work of Robert Galbraith, a writer supposedly possessing a background in the military and civilian security industries. The novel introduces Cormoran Strike, a disabled Afghan War veteran turned private investigator, and his resourceful temporary secretary, Robin Ellacott. The plot follows Strike as he is hired by John Bristow to investigate the death of his sister, supermodel Lula Landry, whose fall from a balcony had been officially ruled a suicide.
The ruse of the pseudonym was eventually dismantled after The Sunday Times investigated the book's polished quality. The newspaper employed professors Peter Millican of the University of Oxford and Patrick Juola of Duquesne University, who utilized software to conduct stylistic analyses comparing the novel against known works by J. K. Rowling and other authors. While these academic methods provided compelling evidence, the actual reveal was triggered by a leak on Twitter from the friend of a lawyer’s wife at Russells Solicitors, the firm representing Rowling. The firm later apologized and made a donation to the Soldiers' Charity.
The novel’s success launched the Cormoran Strike series, which has continued with several sequels, including The Silkworm in 2014 and The Running Grave in 2023. The narrative itself weaves a complex web of family secrets, involving Lula’s biological roots, her hidden will, and the murderous motivations of her adoptive brother, John Bristow. Bristow’s desperation to cover up embezzlement and his jealousy over Lula’s success drove him to kill not only his sister but also her friend Rochelle and his own brother, Charlie, years prior. The investigation serves as the foundation for the enduring professional partnership between Strike and Robin.
