In short: Thomas Noguchi became a household name by performing autopsies on icons like Marilyn Monroe and Robert F. Kennedy. Yet, his career was defined by more than just celebrity cases; it was a volatile mix of groundbreaking forensic work, intense professional scrutiny, and high-stakes political battles within the Los Angeles County system.

Born in 1927, Thomas Noguchi rose from a medical education in Tokyo to become the Chief Medical Examiner-Coroner for Los Angeles County in 1967. His tenure was marked by the autopsy of Marilyn Monroe, which thrust him into the public eye. He later oversaw investigations into the deaths of figures including Sharon Tate, Janis Joplin, and John Belushi. These high-profile examinations made him a celebrity in his own right, though his methods often drew criticism from established medical institutions.

Noguchi's career was punctuated by controversy, most notably following the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. His finding that the fatal shot was fired from an extremely close range—between 0.5 and 3 inches—sparked enduring conspiracy theories, as witnesses placed the convicted assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, much further away. Noguchi later clarified in his 1983 memoir, Coroner, that he had never formally concluded that Sirhan was the person who fired that specific shot.

The coroner’s office was frequently a site of conflict. In 1968, he was pressured to resign after allegations surfaced regarding his conduct and comments about colleagues, though he was later reinstated following a public petition. By 1982, he was demoted to physician specialist amid claims of mismanagement and excessive media attention, particularly following the deaths of William Holden and Natalie Wood. Despite these professional upheavals, Noguchi remained a significant figure in forensic medicine, eventually serving as president of the World Association for Medical Law from 2010 to 2022 and receiving the Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Emperor of Japan in 1999.
