In short: Donald Harvey spent seventeen years undetected as a hospital orderly, using methods from arsenic to ventilators to kill patients. While he confessed to dozens of murders, his spree only ended after a suspicious autopsy triggered a media investigation. He eventually pleaded guilty to thirty-seven murders before meeting a violent end.

Donald Harvey, born in 1952, began his career as a hospital orderly at age eighteen. His first confirmed murder occurred in May 1970 at Marymount Hospital in Kentucky, where he smothered an elderly stroke victim. Over the next seventeen years, Harvey operated across multiple facilities, including the Cincinnati V.A. Medical Hospital and Drake Memorial Hospital. He utilized a disturbing variety of methods, including cyanide, arsenic, insulin, and the deliberate infection of patients with hepatitis serum. He also targeted individuals outside the hospital, including his own roommate and neighbors.

Harvey’s ability to evade detection for nearly two decades was facilitated by lax vetting processes for hospital orderlies and his tendency to work in wards where patient mortality was already high. His crimes only came to light in March 1987, when an autopsy on John Powell revealed lethal levels of cyanide. Investigative journalist Pat Minarcin of WCPO-TV played a critical role in uncovering the scope of Harvey’s actions, gathering evidence that linked him to at least twenty-four murders. This pressure forced Harvey’s lawyer to negotiate a plea bargain to avoid the death penalty.

In 1987, Harvey pleaded guilty to thirty-seven murders across Ohio and Kentucky, receiving multiple life sentences. He remained incarcerated until March 2017, when he was beaten to death in his cell by fellow inmate James Elliott. Elliott, who claimed his actions were a form of vigilante justice for the victims' families, was later sentenced to prison for the killing. Harvey’s case remains a chilling example of how systemic failures in medical oversight can allow a predator to operate in plain sight for years, hiding behind the guise of mercy while inflicting calculated harm on the vulnerable.
