How one modular platform simplified 100 different car designs
In short: Before 2015, Toyota managed a sprawling labyrinth of roughly 100 different vehicle platforms. Today, they have condensed that complexity into a streamlined global architecture. This shift isn't just about manufacturing efficiency; it is a fundamental redesign of how cars share DNA while maintaining unique identities.
The Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) represents a pivot toward radical modularity. By establishing standardized seat heights, Toyota enabled the sharing of critical interior components like steering systems, shifters, pedals, and airbags across various models. Because these parts are often hidden from view, different vehicles can share the same underlying 'bones' while retaining distinct aesthetic identities in their cabins. The impact on production is significant.
The TNGA platforms cost 20 percent less to produce than previous designs while simultaneously improving vehicle dynamics. They offer increased chassis stiffness, lower centers of gravity for sharper handling, and lower hood cowls to improve forward visibility. This engineering trade-off allows Toyota to scale from city cars like the A-segment TNGA-B to luxury executive vehicles using the TNGA-L.
This simplification extends beyond the chassis to the powertrain. Alongside the TNGA platforms, Toyota developed the Dynamic Force engine lineup, which replaced over 800 individual engine variants with just 17 versions across nine engines. By 2020, these five core platforms underpinned more than 50% of all Toyota vehicles sold globally, a figure expected to reach about 80% by 2023. Looking forward, the architecture is evolving for the electric era with e-TNGA (or the 40PL platform). Announced in October 2019, this dedicated battery electric vehicle architecture is partitioned into five modules: front, center, rear, battery, and motor. This modularity allows Toyota to offer various battery capacities and drive configurations—including dual-motor all-wheel drive—across a wide range of future models planned through 2025.
