The prestige of a straight-six: how Toyota's M engine defined an era
In short: For over 30 years, the Toyota M engine served as the brand's crown jewel. It wasn't just a powerplant; it was a masterclass in evolution, transitioning from simple chain-driven designs to sophisticated, belt-driven dual camshaft systems that set world firsts in maintenance-free engineering.
The M family of engines, produced from the 1960s through the 1990s, represented Toyota's most prestigious internal combustion designs outside of their rare V8 series. These longitudinally mounted straight-6 engines were the backbone of luxury and performance models like the Toyota Crown, Mark II, and the iconic Supra. They were manufactured at the Toyota Kamigo plant in Toyota City, Japan, utilizing a consistent construction of a cast-iron block paired with an aluminum cylinder head.
The engine's lineage is a study in rapid technological adaptation. It began as a 2.0 L (1,988 cc) 2-valve SOHC design in 1965, producing about 110–115 PS. By the 1980s, it had evolved into a DOHC system. A pivotal moment occurred with the 5M-GE variant, which introduced Bosch L-Jetronic-derived electronic fuel injection and hydraulic valve lifters. Notably, this version featured rocker arms and valve lash adjusters that eliminated the need for manual valve clearance maintenance—a global first for any twin-cam engine.
Beyond standard production, the M family branched into diverse high-performance niches. The 3M variant featured a special Yamaha-designed aluminum head to power the MF10 2000GT, described as Japan's first true original supercar. Meanwhile, the turbocharged M-TEU utilized a Garret T-03 turbo to reach 160 bhp by 1983. Even in the aftermarket, the 5M-GE was so robust it was successfully adapted for powerboat racing in the mid-1980s, with kits pushing its displacement to 3.1 L and output to 250 bhp.
