In short: In 2014, UAB abruptly terminated its football program for economic reasons. It was a move that many thought would be permanent. Yet, in a rare feat of athletic persistence, the school secured new funding and successfully reinstated the program just three years later, rebuilding from the ground up.

The termination of UAB's football program on December 2, 2014, was driven by economic pressures. The move was so significant that the university briefly added men's cross country to maintain its NCAA Division I status. However, the landscape shifted quickly. By June 1, 2015, new revenue pledges allowed the school to announce the program's reinstatement. The NCAA granted permission for UAB to return to Division I FBS football, with the goal of being bowl-eligible by the fall of 2017.

Rebuilding a program from scratch presented unique hurdles. Because of the hiatus, UAB had to navigate massive player transfers and strict NCAA recruiting rules. The strategy involved rebuilding the roster largely with junior college transfers. This path led to a successful return in 2017, where the team went 8-5 and secured a bowl berth by defeating Rice 52–21. The program reached a milestone on December 1, 2018, by winning its first-ever conference championship against Middle Tennessee.

The physical infrastructure of the program has seen a massive overhaul since the return. UAB invested in a $200 million, 47,100-seat Protective Stadium, which opened in October 2021. Additionally, the school raised over $22.5 million to construct a 46,000-square-foot football operations center and an 80,000-square-foot Legacy Pavilion. These facilities, alongside renovations to Bartow Arena, represent a multi-million dollar commitment to the program's long-term stability.

Beyond the field, the UAB Athletics Foundation has played a critical role in this recovery. Formed in November 2015, the nonprofit has raised more than $100 million as of 2022. In 2025, the school launched the Competitive Excellence Fund to further supplement the university's revenue-sharing model and support student-athlete scholarships.
