In short: The 1996 season was a period of profound transition. From the birth of the Big 12 to the introduction of overtime rules, the year saw the dissolution of old rivalries and the emergence of new power structures that would eventually lead to the creation of the Bowl Championship Series.

The 1996 NCAA Division I-A season was defined by structural upheaval and high-stakes drama. The Big 12 Conference launched this year, combining the Big 8 with four schools from the defunct Southwest Conference: Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Texas. This realignment disrupted long-standing traditions, such as the Nebraska–Oklahoma rivalry, while turning the Texas–Oklahoma 'Red River Shootout' into a conference game. Simultaneously, Conference USA was formed through a merger of the Metro and Great Midwest conferences.

On the field, the season introduced a permanent change to how games were decided: the end of ties. Following a 1995 trial for postseason games, an overtime system—often called the 'Kansas Playoff' rules—was expanded to all Division I-A games. This era also saw significant movement in program status, with four schools—Alabama–Birmingham, Boise State, Central Florida, and Idaho—upgrading from Division I-AA.

The season culminated in the Sugar Bowl, the designated Bowl Alliance national championship game. In a rematch of an earlier regular-season meeting where No. 1 Florida State had defeated No. 2 Florida 24–21, the Gators secured their first national championship. Led by Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel and head coach Steve Spurrier, Florida defeated Florida State 52–20. This outcome, alongside the snubbing of No. 5 BYU from major bowls, contributed to the eventual creation of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) to address inequities in the postseason system.
