In short: In 2014, UAB officially ended its football program, citing a $49 million price tag to remain competitive. The decision sparked such intense community outrage that the university was forced to reverse its stance, rebuilding the team from scratch to return to the field in 2017.

UAB's journey to the FBS was a complex climb through the NCAA hierarchy. After starting as a club team in 1989, the university officially began Division III play in 1991. However, because the school already competed in Division I for other sports, an NCAA ruling forced a reclassification to Division I-AA in 1993. The program eventually reached the top tier (Division I-A) in 1996, beginning a period of growth that included a milestone victory over LSU in 2000 and its first bowl appearance in 2004.

The program's most dramatic chapter began in 2014. Following a 5-19 season, President Ray Watts announced the shutdown of football, rifle, and bowling, projecting costs of $49 million over five years. The move faced immediate backlash from students, faculty, and civic leaders, leading to a vote of no confidence in the presidency. This public pressure, combined with over $27 million in community fundraising, led to the program's reinstatement. The team returned in 2017, eventually winning its first conference championship in 2018.

Since its return, UAB has established itself as a consistent competitor in the American Conference. The team moved into a $200 million Protective Stadium in 2021, which features a dedicated 6,442-square-foot recruiting and banquet space. While the program has faced coaching transitions—including the hiring of former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer in 2022—it recently entered a new era in late 2025 under head coach Alex Mortensen, who secured the permanent role after leading the team to an upset over No. 22 Memphis.
