The USS Roosevelt is a naval vessel honoring both a president and a first lady.
In short: Commissioned in 2000, the USS Roosevelt is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer with a unique dual legacy. Named for both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt, the ship serves as a floating tribute to their combined influence, featuring a coat of arms rich with symbolism reflecting their political and personal history.
The USS Roosevelt (DDG-80) represents a significant milestone in naval history as the first ship named to honor both a U.S. president and a first lady. Construction of this Flight IIA Aegis guided missile destroyer began at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on 15 December 1997. Following its launch and christening in early 1999, the vessel was officially commissioned on 14 October 2000 at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, under the command of Commander Matthew E. Bobola.
The ship's design and identity are deeply rooted in the Roosevelt legacy. Its coat of arms utilizes traditional Navy colors, with dark blue representing the sea and gold signifying excellence. The shield features a sword and fret, symbolizing readiness and the stability brought to America during the Great Depression and World War II. The crest includes a ship wheel, referencing Franklin D. Roosevelt's tenure as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and a lozenge representing Eleanor Roosevelt's political contributions. The rose on the crest serves as a dual nod to the family name and the state flower of New York.
Beyond its symbolic identity, the vessel has maintained an active operational history. In 2011, it completed a seven-month deployment, spending 205 days at sea and traveling over 38,000 nautical miles. The ship has participated in various international exercises, including Formidable Shield 2019, and has been involved in diverse missions ranging from anti-submarine warfare exercises to the interception of a rogue oil tanker in 2014. In 2020, the ship shifted its home port to Naval Station Rota, Spain, where it continues to support U.S. national security interests across the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Arctic regions.
