How Turkey built a national fleet of stealthy anti-submarine warships
In short: The Ada-class corvette was designed to give the Turkish Navy high-seas patrol and anti-submarine capabilities. Built with low-observability principles, these vessels represent a significant step toward national naval independence, utilizing specialized domestic technology to manage complex combat and propulsion systems in modern maritime warfare.
Developed as part of the MILGEM project, the Ada-class corvettes were engineered to serve as versatile platforms for anti-submarine warfare and high-seas patrols. While they share design similarities with the U.S. Navy's Freedom-class littoral combat ships, the Ada-class is more heavily armed and features more advanced radar and sonar systems. Unlike the Freedom-class, which relies on variable mission modules and higher speeds, the Ada-class focuses on specialized domestic integration.
The class utilizes a sophisticated RENK CODAG propulsion system. This configuration allows the ships to operate in diesel mode, single gas turbine mode, or a combined CODAG mode. In the latter, the gas turbine (rated at 23,000 kW) and two diesel engines (each rated at 4,320 kW) work together to provide a total of 27,320 kW of power. This versatility is essential for the diverse mission profiles required of modern corvettes.
Technological sovereignty is a core theme of the class. Equipped with the ADVENT combat management system—an improved iteration of GENESIS—the ships also carry a domestic hull-mounted sonar created by Turkey's Scientific and Technological Research Council. Nano-enhanced Fiber Reinforced Polymer is used to construct the sonar dome. This move toward domestic systems has seen the class exported to nations including Pakistan and Malaysia, and even ordered by Ukraine in a $256 million deal signed in December 2020.
