In short: The Type 730 is a sophisticated seven-barrelled 30 mm rotary cannon designed to neutralize anti-ship missiles and precision-guided weapons. Operating as an autonomous closed-loop system, it integrates radar and electro-optical tracking to provide rapid reaction times, serving as a critical defensive layer for the Chinese Navy's modern surface combatants.

The Type 730, designated H/PJ-12, is a Chinese close-in weapon system (CIWS) developed by the 713th research institute. While its appearance draws comparisons to the Dutch Goalkeeper, it utilizes indigenous radar and optical systems. The weapon is powered by two electric motors and features a maximum rate of fire of 5,800 rounds per minute. To prevent heat damage to the barrels, it is recommended not to exceed a firing rate of 4,200 rounds per minute for extended periods, as higher rates accelerate wear and can melt the rifling.

The system's fire control relies on the TR47C radar, which employs phased array technology to track targets and monitor the splashes of its own 30 mm rounds. This integration allows for faster reaction times compared to the Russian AK-630, where radar and fire control are often separated. The OFC-3 electro-optical system complements the radar, incorporating laser range finders and various camera modules. The system is highly versatile, capable of engaging surface targets at 5,000 meters, aircraft at up to 3,500 meters, and anti-ship missiles at an effective range of 2,500 meters.

Evolution of the platform has led to several variants, including the Type 730C, which integrates FL-3000N missiles, and the land-based LD-2000, used for air defense and counter-rocket missions. The most advanced iteration, the Type 1130 or H/PJ-11, represents China's third-generation CIWS. Featuring 11 barrels and a staggering rate of fire exceeding 10,000 rounds per minute, it is designed to intercept missiles traveling at speeds up to Mach 4. These systems are now standard on major Chinese naval assets, including aircraft carriers like the Liaoning and Shandong, as well as the Type 055 destroyers.
