In short: It is not a standalone program, yet it automates your entire workflow. From Excel to Word, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) acts as a hidden layer of logic, allowing different applications to communicate, manipulate interfaces, and execute complex, automated tasks behind the scenes.

Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is an event-driven programming language built into most Microsoft Office desktop applications. While based on the pre-.NET Visual Basic 6.0, which Microsoft no longer updates except under specific support for Windows 10 and 11, the VBA implementation itself continues to evolve to support new Office features. Unlike standard software, VBA code typically runs only within a host application, though it can control one program from another using OLE Automation.

The language's power lies in its ability to create user-defined functions, automate repetitive processes, and access low-level Windows API functionality through dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). It can even manipulate user interfaces, such as custom menus, toolbars, and dialog boxes. This capability allows for sophisticated workflows; for example, a VBA script in Microsoft Access can run a query, export data to Excel for analysis, and then generate a formatted report in Word or send the results via Outlook.

However, this flexibility introduces significant security risks. Because VBA makes it easy to write macros, it is a frequent vector for malware. Malicious actors can redefine core system macros, such as AutoOpen, to execute unauthorized code when a document is opened. In some extreme cases, even 'mating' between two different viruses can result in a new, unrecognizable strain. A strategy to automatically disable VBA macros within internet-sourced files was unveiled by Microsoft during February 2022.
