The psychological secret behind why we crave the highs and lows of sports

In short: Beyond the raw athleticism, sports fans endure a rollercoaster of stress and heartbreak. Yet, research suggests this emotional volatility might actually be a gateway to better mental health, providing a unique sense of community and shared identity that protects us from loneliness.

While the physical spectacle of the Olympics or top-flight football captures our attention, the true engine of fandom is narrative. As journalist Kate Fagan notes, the real investment comes from the stakes and the underlying storylines that drive competition. However, the benefits of this investment extend far beyond mere entertainment, touching on deep-seated psychological needs for connection.

Research led by Helen Keyes at Anglia Ruskin University, analyzing data from 7,209 adults in England, reveals a striking correlation between sports spectatorship and wellbeing. The study, using the UK government's Taking Part Survey, found that individuals who attended a live sporting event within the last year reported higher life satisfaction, a greater sense of life worth, and reduced loneliness compared to non-attendees.

These benefits are not limited to live stadiums. Watching via television or the internet also correlates with fewer depressive symptoms, with the effect potentially strengthening as viewing frequency increases. Regardless of the medium, sports fans often report higher levels of life fulfillment.

The mechanism behind this appears to be 'social identity theory.' By supporting a team, fans form 'in-groups' that provide emotional support. This creates a phenomenon researchers at KU Leuven call 'basking in reflected glory,' where fans share in the team's success. Conversely, to avoid the psychological sting of defeat, fans may engage in 'cutting off reflected failure,' distancing themselves from the team to protect their own wellbeing.
