Participating in team sports is linked to better mental health and social outcomes
In short: A systematic review of 29 studies involving adults found that sport participation is related to improved psychological well-being and social benefits. The analysis of research published between 2012 and 2020 suggests that while all forms of sport are beneficial, those playing in teams may experience more significant advantages for mental and social health.
Researchers synthesized data from various qualitative and quantitative studies to explore how community and elite-level sport affects adults. They found associations between sport and higher self-esteem, lower anxiety, and better interpersonal communication.
While the review highlights the benefits of frequent participation and team settings, the authors noted that some evidence suggests elite athletes may face higher psychological distress. Additionally, the quality of quantitative studies in the review was inconsistent.
Why it matters: While all sports offer benefits, team-based activities may provide the strongest boost to mental and social well-being.
