How a defensive battle between two giants defined the 1994 NBA Finals
In short: The 1994 NBA Finals was a grueling, low-scoring defensive showdown between two legendary centers. As Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing clashed, the series became a high-stakes rematch of their 1984 college championship battle, ultimately deciding the fate of two cities and the legacy of a legendary coach.
The series featured a historic matchup between two former college rivals. In 1984, Patrick Ewing's Georgetown University defeated Hakeem Olajuwon's University of Houston 84–75 in the NCAA Championship. Decades later, the two met again in the 1994 NBA Finals, where Olajuwon's dominance proved decisive. He averaged 26.9 points per game on 50.0% shooting, outscoring Ewing, who averaged 18.9 points on 36.3% shooting.
While Olajuwon secured the offensive edge, Ewing delivered a defensive masterclass. He set a then-NBA Finals record with 30 total blocks during the series, including an 8-block performance in Game 5. This defensive intensity contributed to a series of seven low-scoring, defensive games. The Houston Rockets eventually secured their first NBA championship by winning Game 7 with a 90–84 victory.
The series carried heavy weight for both franchises. For Houston, it was the city's first professional championship in an existing league since 1975. For the New York Knicks, it was a chance to win their first title since 1973. This result granted Knicks manager Pat Riley a rare status: he turned into the inaugural coach to suffer a Game 7 NBA Finals defeat with two separate franchises, following his 1984 loss.
The series was also marked by unusual external events. During Game 5, NBC affiliates split their coverage between the basketball game and O. J. Simpson's slow-speed freeway chase. This broadcast anomaly occurred while the Rockets were building momentum to overcome an early-season 'Choke City' label to become 'Clutch City'.
