How a sixth-seeded underdog achieved the impossible in the 1995 NBA Finals
In short: In 1995, the Houston Rockets pulled off a feat of basketball alchemy. Despite lacking home-court advantage in any playoff round and entering as a lowly sixth seed, they swept the Orlando Magic to secure back-to-back championships, cementing one of the most improbable title runs in sports history.
The 1995 NBA Finals featured a legendary clash of titans at the center position: Hakeem Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets and Shaquille O'Neal of the Orlando Magic. While the matchup drew comparisons to the 1960s battles between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, the series ultimately belonged to Olajuwon. He became one of the few players to win consecutive Finals MVP awards, averaging 33 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.81 blocks across a 22-game postseason.
The Rockets' path to the title was defined by extreme adversity. Since the 1984 playoff expansion, no other squad has secured a title without possessing home-court advantage throughout all four postseason stages. Their run included defeating three teams with winning percentages of .700 or higher, including the Utah Jazz and the Phoenix Suns. They also became the first repeat NBA champions to defend their title via a sweep.
The series was not without its dramatic, heartbreaking moments for the Orlando Magic. In Game 1, trailing late, Nick Anderson missed four consecutive free throws, a mistake that would haunt his career. This allowed Kenny Smith to hit a three-pointer to force overtime, setting a then-record of seven three-pointers in a Finals game. Despite the Magic's high-powered offense and a 57-25 regular season, the experienced Rockets' defense and Olajuwon's dominance proved insurmountable.
This championship remains a historical outlier. The Rockets' 6th-seed victory stands as the lowest seeding ever to win the NBA Finals. Additionally, their 'Clutch City' legacy is highlighted by being the latest champions to triumph despite recording under 50 victories during an 82-game season.
