In short: Held at New York's Paramount Theatre, the 1997 NFL draft was defined by elite offensive linemen and prolific running backs. While some stars were selected at the very top, the class also produced legendary players who entered the league as undrafted free agents, proving that talent often exists beyond the draft board.

The 1997 NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting, held on April 19–20, was characterized by an extraordinary concentration of offensive line talent. The St. Louis Rams secured the first overall selection, choosing Ohio State's Orlando Pace. Pace went on to earn seven consecutive Pro Bowl nods from 2000 to 2006 and was eventually inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016. Following him in the first round were several other future legends, including the Seattle Seahawks' sixth overall pick, Walter Jones. Jones, an offensive tackle from Florida State, became a cornerstone of the league, earning nine Pro Bowls—including eight straight from 2001 to 2008—and a Hall of Fame induction in 2014.

Beyond the trenches, the draft was notable for its high-caliber running backs. Players such as Warrick Dunn, Corey Dillon, and Tiki Barber each achieved the significant milestone of rushing for over 10,000 career yards. The class also demonstrated the unpredictable nature of professional scouting; several Pro Bowl talents, including Jake Delhomme, Priest Holmes, and Pat Williams, were not selected in the draft at all, entering the league as undrafted players.

The draft's depth extended into the defensive and tight end positions as well. The Miami Dolphins selected defensive end Jason Taylor in the third round with the 73rd pick, a move that eventually led to his 2017 Hall of Fame induction. Similarly, the Kansas City Chiefs used the 13th overall pick to select tight end Tony Gonzalez, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019. This combination of blue-chip offensive stars and late-round or undrafted gems makes the 1997 class a significant benchmark in NFL history.
