The year the tennis hierarchy collapsed at Wimbledon
In short: In 1996, the established order of professional tennis was upended in a single fortnight. From an unseeded underdog clinching history to a bizarre streaker interrupting the final, this tournament remains one of the most unpredictable chapters in the sport's storied past.
The 1996 Wimbledon Championships were defined by a massive collapse of the elite seedings. In a rare display of volatility, four major heavyweights—including the 1992 champion Andre Agassi, the reigning French Open winner Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Michael Chang, and Jim Courier—were all ousted in the very first round. Even three-time champion Boris Becker failed to reach the final stages, withdrawing in the third round due to a wrist injury.
Amidst this chaos, Richard Krajicek emerged as a historic figure. Originally unseeded, he entered the draw only after Thomas Muster withdrew due to injury. Despite being listed as an unseeded player in the official souvenir program, the committee eventually recognized him as a seed throughout the tournament. Krajicek went on to defeat MaliVai Washington in straight sets (6–3, 6–4, 6–3) to become the first Dutch champion in the event's history.
The tournament also broke several racial and competitive milestones. MaliVai Washington became the first Black man to reach a major final since Arthur Ashe in 1975. Additionally, no player among the four semifinalists had secured a major championship prior to that season, marking a first since the 1990 French Open; Todd Martin was the sole individual to have appeared in a previous final.
The event is perhaps most famous for its visual absurdity: a woman wearing only an apron streaked across the net during pre-match photos. She was detained until the match concluded and fined £200. While it caused global headlines, even the Wimbledon club acknowledged the stunt provided 'light amusement' to fans enduring poor weather.
