The only time a golden goal decided a major European final
In short: In 2001, Liverpool secured a historic trophy in the most dramatic fashion possible. By scoring a golden goal in extra-time, they ended a long drought for English football and completed a rare domestic and continental treble in a single season.
The 2000–01 UEFA Cup marked a significant turning point for English football. Following a five-year ban from European competition triggered by the Heysel disaster in 1985, Liverpool became the first English club to lift the trophy in the post-Heysel era. Their victory over Alavés in the final was not just a personal milestone but a collective one, as it also represented the first European title for the club since the ban was lifted.
The tournament's conclusion was historically unique. Liverpool won the final with a golden goal during extra-time—a rule that would not be abolished until 2002. This specific mechanism meant the match ended immediately upon the first goal scored in the additional period, making it the only instance of such a finish in any major European club cup competition during that era.
Beyond the final, the season was a logistical feat of scale. A total of 145 teams from 51 different UEFA associations competed for the title. The qualification structure was complex, involving league coefficients, Fair Play rankings, and a redistribution system for vacated spots. For example, if a domestic cup winner also qualified for the Champions League, their UEFA Cup berth would be passed down to the next highest-placed qualifier or the cup runner-up.
The competition also served as a secondary path for elite clubs. While Galatasaray won the previous edition, they were ineligible to defend it because they automatically qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Instead, the tournament absorbed 16 teams eliminated from the Champions League and 8 teams dropped from its group stage, creating a dense field of high-caliber opposition.
