A season of rule shifts and the rise of a future legend
In short: The 2000 NFL season was defined by significant regulatory changes and coaching shifts. While the Baltimore Ravens claimed the championship, the draft saw a low-round selection that would eventually rewrite the record books for the New England Patriots.
The 81st regular season of the National Football League introduced pivotal rule changes that altered the game's mechanics. The 'Bert Emanuel' rule was implemented, allowing a player to maintain control of the ball even if it touches the ground during a catch. Additionally, players wearing eligible numbers (1–49 or 80–89) no longer had to report to the referee before playing quarterback, a change that increased the frequency of offensive trick plays. To curb excessive celebrations, the league also began assessing fines for group celebrations involving two or more players.
The season was marked by significant leadership transitions across several franchises. The New England Patriots hired Bill Belichick, a move that triggered a dispute with the Jets, who claimed Belichick was still under contract. To resolve the matter, Commissioner Paul Tagliabue facilitated a deal where the Patriots provided a first-round draft pick in 2000 to secure his services. Other major coaching changes included Mike Sherman arriving in Green Bay and Mike Martz taking over the St. Louis Rams following Dick Vermeil's retirement after winning Super Bowl XXXIV.
One of the most enduring legacies of the 2000 NFL draft, held in New York City, was the selection of Tom Brady. Selected by the New England Patriots during the sixth round at number 199, Brady would later secure an unmatched total of seven Super Bowl victories and three NFL MVP honours. The season itself concluded at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, where the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants with a score of 34–7 to win Super Bowl XXXV.
