How the 2001 baseball season became a historic, patriotic homecoming
In short: The 2001 Major League Baseball season was defined by unprecedented records and profound national shifts. From Barry Bonds shattering home run milestones to the league's pause following the September 11 attacks, the year transformed the sport into a symbol of resilience and a showcase for legendary individual performances.
The 2001 season was marked by significant historical disruptions. Following the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., on September 11, Major League Baseball suspended games for a week. Due to this postponement, the regular season concluded on October 7 instead of September 30, and the World Series finished on November 4, marking the first time it ended during that month.
On the field, the year saw extraordinary feats of athleticism. Barry Bonds became the 17th player in history to reach 500 home runs, achieving the milestone on April 17 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He also became the 25th player to join the 3,000-hit club on October 7 against the San Diego Padres. Meanwhile, the Seattle Mariners matched the Major League record for most regular-season wins with 116 victories.
The season also featured dramatic statistical anomalies. On August 5, the Cleveland Indians overcame a 12-run deficit to defeat the Seattle Mariners 15–14 in extra innings, tying the record for the largest deficit ever overcome to win a game. Additionally, on August 8, a team scored 13 runs in the ninth inning against the Texas Rangers, tying a modern record set in 1978.
The year also saw shifts in how fans consumed the game. National TV rights were divided between Fox Sports and ESPN for the first time, while Fox's sister channel, FX, also broadcast Saturday primetime matches. This broadcasting period represented the final year Fox Sports aired regular season matches on FX or Fox Family.
