The 1996 World Series: A dramatic comeback that sparked a Yankees dynasty
In short: After being outscored 16–1 in their first two home games, the New York Yankees faced impossible odds. Facing a dominant Atlanta Braves team, they staged a stunning reversal to win four straight games, marking the beginning of one of baseball's most legendary eras.
The 1996 World Series began as a nightmare for the New York Yankees. Playing at home, they were overwhelmed by the defending champion Atlanta Braves, losing the first two games and being outscored by a massive margin of 16–1. Driven by 19-year-old Andruw Jones, the Braves' attack was prolific; he established a new record as the youngest player ever to homer in his initial World Series appearance.
Despite the early deficit, the Yankees managed a historic turnaround. Joining the 1985 Kansas City Royals and the 1986 New York Mets, they were just the third squad to clinch a World Series title after dropping their opening two home matches. This comeback was fueled by a superior Yankees bullpen, highlighted by relief pitcher John Wetteland, who was named the World Series MVP after saving all four of the team's victories.
The series was also a showcase of individual brilliance and personal resilience. The Braves relied on the pitching of John Smoltz, who had won 24 games and a Cy Young Award that season. Meanwhile, the Yankees' roster featured rising star rookie Derek Jeter and veteran pitcher Dwight Gooden, who had recorded a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners earlier that year. The Yankees' victory, which went four games to two, signaled the start of a major dynasty for the franchise.
The series also held historical significance for Atlanta. By hosting both the Olympics and the World Series during a single year, the city achieved a unique feat, using Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium for both occasions. For the Braves, the loss was the start of a long drought; they would not win another World Series game until 2021.
