The night of the all-penalty final at San Siro
In short: In May 2001, football fans witnessed a match where the ball rarely touched the net through open play. Between early errors and clinical spot-kicks, the Champions League final became a psychological battle of nerves, decided entirely by the drama of the penalty spot.
The 2001 UEFA Champions League final, held on 23 May 2001, at the San Siro in Milan, featured a clash between two sides seeking redemption. Both Bayern Munich and Valencia had suffered heartbreak in previous years, losing the 1999 and 2000 finals respectively. The match itself was uniquely defined by its lack of outfield goals; both scores came from penalties, earning it the moniker of an 'all-penalty' final.
Valencia struck first in the third minute when Gaizka Mendieta converted a penalty following a handball by Patrik Andersson. Bayern Munich had an immediate chance to equalize through Mehmet Scholl, but Santiago Cañizares saved the shot. The deadlock was eventually broken in the second half when Amedeo Carboni handled the ball, allowing Stefan Effenberg to level the score at 1–1. After thirty minutes of scoreless extra time, the match moved to a marathon penalty shoot-out.
The shoot-out became a showcase for Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. After trading goals, Kahn saved crucial strikes from Zlatko Zahovič and Mauricio Pellegrino. His performance was so impactful that he later received the UEFA Fair Play Award for consoling Cañizares after the loss. For Bayern, the victory secured their fourth title and their first European Cup in twenty-five years. Conversely, the match marked a period of misfortune for Valencia manager Héctor Cúper, who suffered his third consecutive European final defeat.
