In short: While the Houston Rockets beat the odds to secure the top pick, the 2002 draft class would become a study in both global expansion and sudden tragedy. From Hall of Fame legends to careers cut short by injury, the night at Madison Square Garden changed the league's trajectory forever.

On May 19, 2002, the NBA draft lottery concluded with a surprising result. Despite the Chicago Bulls and Golden State Warriors each holding a 22.5% chance at the first pick, the Houston Rockets won the lottery with just an 8.9% probability. The draft itself took place on June 17 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, marking the final time the event was broadcast on TNT before ESPN secured the rights.

The class was defined by extreme highs and lows. Yao Ming, the first-ever pick from the Shanghai Sharks, became a Hall of Famer, largely due to his impact on basketball's popularity in China. However, the draft also saw significant tragedy. The second overall pick, Jay Williams, suffered a devastating motorcycle accident two months into his rookie season. The crash shattered his pelvis and tore multiple ligaments in his knee, ending his NBA career. In a compassionate move, the Bulls bought out his contract for $3 million in 2004.

While the draft featured a record 17 international selections, the depth of the class was considered relatively weak outside of the top prospects. Only a few players, such as Amar'e Stoudemire, Carlos Boozer, and Yao Ming, reached the All-NBA Team. Stoudemire made history as the first player to win Rookie of the Year directly out of high school, a feat achieved just one year before LeBron James entered the league. The draft also featured notable absences from the 'green room'—the staging area for top prospects—including Yao Ming, the first number-one pick to miss an invitation since 1987.
