In short: With the arrival of the Houston Texans, the NFL returned to an even number of teams. This expansion triggered a massive realignment of divisions and a new playoff format, fundamentally changing how the league scheduled games and determined its postseason contenders for nearly two decades.

The addition of the Houston Texans brought the league to a stable 32-team count, a number that has remained unchanged since. To accommodate this growth, the NFL underwent a significant realignment. The league organized teams into eight divisions of four teams each, attempting to balance geographic logic with historical rivalries. This restructuring included the creation of the AFC South and NFC South, and saw the Seattle Seahawks return to the NFC West—the conference they originally joined in 1976.

The season also introduced a new eight-year scheduling rotation. This system ensured that every team would play every other team at least once in every stadium over an eight-year period. This was a major departure from the previous system used between 1978 and 2001, which sometimes saw teams in different divisions go over 15 seasons without meeting. Under the new rules, the number of games based on the previous year's record was reduced from four to two.

The playoff structure was similarly overhauled. While the total number of playoff teams remained at 12, the composition changed: four division winners and two wild card teams from each conference now advanced. This specific format, which utilized seeds 1 through 6, remained the standard until 2019. Meanwhile, the season was marked by significant transitions, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning Super Bowl XXXVII on January 26, 2003, which stands as the final Super Bowl ever held in the month of January.

The year was also defined by notable personnel changes and rule updates. The league introduced the 'Equipment NFL' logo on jersey yokes and implemented several new rules, such as the legality of batting the ball. The season was also a time of mourning for the sport, following the death of legendary quarterback Johnny Unitas on September 11, 2002.
