In short: After trading away head coach Jon Gruden for a haul of draft picks, the Oakland Raiders built a league-leading offense. They surged to the Super Bowl, only to face their former leader in a game where his intimate knowledge of their playbook led to a total defensive breakdown.

The 200 2 Oakland Raiders season began under a cloud of uncertainty. After the Raiders' 2001 postseason departure, Al Davis orchestrated a major deal, swapping Jon Gruden for Tampa Bay's two first-rounders, two second-rounders, and money. To replace him, the Raiders promoted offensive coordinator Bill Callahan. Despite the coaching upheaval and early-season struggles—including a mid-season slump that left the team at 4–4—the Raiders rallied to win seven of their final eight games.

The roster was a blend of veteran legends and high-performing talent. The offense, led by MVP quarterback Rich Gannon, topped the league in total yardage. Gannon threw for 4,689 yards, the highest in the NFL that year, supported by a receiving corps featuring Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, and Jerry Porter. On the ground, Charlie Garner amassed 1,903 all-purpose yards. The defense, bolstered by acquisitions like Rod Woodson and Bill Romanowski, helped the team secure the AFC West title and the top seed in the playoffs.

However, the season culminated in a disaster at Super Bowl XXXVII. Entering the game as slight favorites, the Raiders faced Gruden and his Buccaneers. Because the Raiders had failed to alter many of their offensive terms, Gruden possessed a strategic advantage. Buccaneers safety John Lynch could often predict plays based on Gannon's audibles. The Raiders' defense surrendered 34 unanswered points, and Gannon was intercepted five times in total. The 48–21 loss marked the end of an era; the franchise would not win another playoff game until 2016.
