In short: In 2004, the USC Trojans achieved a perfect season, winning every game and holding the number one ranking from start to finish. They were crowned national champions in a landslide—until an NCAA investigation years later stripped them of the title, leaving behind a ghost of a dynasty.

The 2004 USC Trojans campaign was defined by the motto "Leave No Doubt." Under coach Pete Carroll, the team went wire-to-wire as the top-ranked squad in the nation. Led by Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart and versatile star Reggie Bush, the Trojans dominated the season with high-powered offense and a defense that turned the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum into one of the loudest environments in college football.

The team's path to the title was marked by significant milestones: they secured a 49–0 shutout against Colorado State, overcame a halftime deficit against Stanford, and defeated Cal in a game so statistically lopsided (Cal doubled USC's yards and first downs) that it became a turning point for Coliseum crowd participation. They eventually clinched the BCS National Championship by defeating Oklahoma in the 2005 Orange Bowl.

However, the legacy of the season was dismantled on June 10, 2010. The NCAA forced USC to vacate its final two wins from 2004—the UCLA game and the Orange Bowl victory—along with all wins from 2005. These sanctions stemmed from violations regarding the eligibility of Reggie Bush. Consequently, in June 2011, the Trojans were officially stripped of their BCS title.

The controversy highlights a unique paradox in sports history: while the Associated Press still recognizes USC as the 2004 national champions, the official record books remain scarred by the vacancy. It serves as a stark reminder of how administrative violations can erase years of on-field achievement, turning a dominant dynasty into a historical footnote.
