In short: In 2005, the Chicago White Sox transformed from a second-place finisher into a dominant force. By prioritizing speed, veteran leadership, and a 'team-first' mentality, manager Ozzie Guillén orchestrated a wire-to-wire season that ended nearly a century of waiting for a World Series title.

Following an 83–79 season in 2004, manager Ozzie Guillén sought a complete roster makeover. He approached general manager Kenny Williams with a specific vision: a 'small ball' style focused on quickness and team-oriented players. This led to a flurry of strategic acquisitions, including the signing of veteran leader Jermaine Dye and the addition of speedy Scott Podsednik to create havoc for opposing pitchers.

The roster overhaul also addressed team chemistry and pitching depth. The White Sox brought in catcher A. J. Pierzynski to add 'fire' to a quiet clubhouse and signed Orlando "El Duque" Hernández for his postseason expertise. On the mound, the team relied on solid pitching, bolstered by the mid-season emergence of hard-throwing closer Bobby Jenks, who was called up from the minor leagues in July.

The strategy yielded historic results. The White Sox maintained first place in the American League Central for the entire season, finishing the regular season with a 99–63 record. Their postseason run included a 3–0 sweep of the defending champion Boston Red Sox and a 4–1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. They ultimately swept the Houston Astros in the World Series, ending an 88-year championship drought that dated back to 1917.

This success was not without its hurdles. During the regular season, the team faced a significant slump in August, losing 8 out of 9 games and facing pressure from the Cleveland Indians. However, they finished strong, securing their second American League Central title and finishing with the best record in the American League.
