The season Manchester United became the first to score 1,000 goals
In short: In a year defined by a legendary captain's exit and a historic milestone, Manchester United reached a statistical peak. While their European ambitions faltered, they secured a domestic trophy and etched their name into the record books with a goal that many fans still remember vividly.
The 2005–06 season was a period of significant transition and mixed results for Manchester United. After finishing in third place for two consecutive years, the club improved slightly to a second-place finish in the Premier League. Yet, while domestic results improved, a significant decline occurred in Europe; the side missed out on the UEFA Champions League knockout phase for the initial time following the 1994–95 campaign.
One of the most defining narrative arcs of the year was the departure of club captain Roy Keane. A mainstay at Old Trafford since 1993, Keane played his final match on September 18, 2005, in a draw against Liverpool. Following a foot injury, he officially left the club for his boyhood team, Celtic, on November 18, 2005.
His departure was marked by a poignant atmosphere, as fans were plunged into mourning just seven days later by the death of the legendary George Best at age 59. Gary Neville subsequently took over the captaincy. Despite the leadership vacuum, the club achieved significant milestones. They became the first Premier League club to reach 1,000 goals, a feat accomplished on October 29, 2005, during a 4–1 defeat to Middlesbrough. While the loss was heavy, Cristiano Ronaldo scored the historic 1,000th goal deep in injury time. The season also saw the club secure silverware, winning the League Cup by defeating Wigan Athletic 4–0 in the final. This period served as a bridge between eras, balancing the weight of history with the pursuit of new records.
