A rebuilding franchise attempts to escape the shadow of a record-breaking collapse
In short: The 2025 Chicago White Sox season was defined by a desperate pivot. Following a historic 2024 campaign that saw the team set a modern era record for losses, the club entered 2025 with a new manager, a rebranded stadium, and a massive overhaul of its roster.
The 2025 season marked the 126th year of the White Sox in Chicago and their 35th year at Rate Field. This era of transition began in earnest following a disastrous 2024 season where the team finished with an MLB-worst 41–121 record. That previous year was notable for a 21-game losing streak and a record-breaking 121st loss, which was handed to them by the Detroit Tigers.
To address these failures, the team hired Will Venable as their 44th manager on October 31, 2024. Venable brought experience from the Texas Rangers, where he won the 2023 World Series, and previous coaching stints with the Cubs and Red Sox. The front office also engaged in aggressive roster churn, including trading Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox for a package of four players and declining options for key players like Yoán Moncada and C Max Stassi.
The organizational shift extended beyond the dugout to the brand itself. On December 17, 2024, the team shortened the name of its home park from Guaranteed Rate Field to Rate Field. Additionally, the 2025 season served as the debut for the Chicago Sports Network, which replaced NBC Sports Chicago as the team's regional broadcaster. Despite these structural changes, the team struggled to find immediate momentum, clinching their third consecutive losing season after an August 20 loss to the Atlanta Braves.
