In short: Imagine a league where the most successful club in Italian history started with a massive penalty. The 2006–07 Serie B season wasn't just a standard promotion race; it was a high-stakes laboratory of sporting justice, dramatic last-minute escapes, and an unprecedented rise for two clubs seeking redemption.

The 2006–07 Serie B season served as a unique historical crossroads for Italian football. Following the Calciopoli scandal, Juventus—the 27-time champions—were relegated to the second tier. They didn't just enter the league; they entered it under heavy sanctions, starting with a nine-point deficit. Meanwhile, SS Arezzo began their campaign burdened by a six-point penalty. This created a surreal landscape where one of the world's most decorated clubs had to fight through a 'punishment' season alongside debutants like Frosinone.

Despite these handicaps, Juventus dominated the narrative. They secured promotion with three games still left in the schedule following a 5–1 victory over Arezzo on May 19, 2007. Their dominance was so absolute that they clinched the championship just one week later against Mantova 1911. This season also saw the introduction of the Ali della Vittoria Cup, the first trophy ever designed specifically for a Serie B champion.

The drama peaked on the final day in a series of high-tension results. Napoli secured promotion with a 0–0 draw against Genoa, while Piacenza's inability to beat Triestina left them ten points behind third place. Because that gap exceeded ten points, no playoffs were held, and Genoa took the final automatic promotion spot. The season concluded with a heart-wrenching relegation for Arezzo; despite winning their final match 3–1 against Treviso, they were sent down because Spezia scored a dramatic goal in the 91st minute of their own game to leapfrog them into the playoffs.
