The season Manchester City traded kit suppliers for symbolic bees
In short: In 2009, Manchester City underwent a radical identity shift. Beyond just swapping sponsors and managers, the club introduced kits steeped in heraldic history—from Milan-inspired stripes to symbols of industrial hives. It was a year where aesthetic nostalgia met a high-stakes transition in leadership.
The 2009–10 season marked a pivotal turning point for Manchester City, defined by significant management upheaval and commercial rebranding. The club began the campaign under Mark Hughes, but after a stagnant run of seven consecutive Premier League draws, he was sacked in mid-December. He was replaced by Roberto Mancini, who took over with only five months of experience at Eastlands. This transition coincided with a major commercial shift: the club moved from Thomas Cook to Etihad Airways as its shirt sponsor and switched kit suppliers from Le Coq Sportif to Nike-owned Umbro.
The aesthetic changes were deeply rooted in historical symbolism. The new all-black away kit featured gold vertical shoulder trim, designed by David Blanch to coordinate with a gold and black goalkeeper strip. This specific color palette was intended to evoke the Manchester coat of arms—a globe covered with bees. In heraldry, the bee represents a 'hive of industry.' The club maintained a tradition of wearing this crest at Wembley or major cup finals as a symbol of civic pride. Additionally, the new third kit featured a red and black diagonal sash, a nostalgic nod to 1970s designs which themselves were inspired by Milan's stripes, first introduced by coach Malcolm Allison.
On the pitch, the season was characterized by contrasting individual fortunes. Carlos Tevez emerged as the club's most vital asset, scoring 29 goals in his debut year. In stark contrast, previous fan favorite Robinho struggled to replicate his past success; he was eventually loaned out to Brazilian side Santos in January. Despite these internal shifts, the club achieved a unique distinction: they were the only team to complete the 'league double' over the side that ultimately won the 'league and cup double' during that season.
This era solidified Manchester City's position as a modern powerhouse while simultaneously anchoring its visual identity in the industrial heritage of Greater Manchester.
