How a new manager and a brand overhaul reshaped Manchester City
In short: When Pep Guardiola arrived in 2016, he brought more than just tactical genius. Alongside his appointment, Manchester City underwent a sweeping identity shift, altering everything from their official crest to their social media presence, sparking intense debate among the club's traditionalist supporters.
The 2016–17 season marked a pivotal era for Manchester City, the club's 115th season of competitive football. After four years of pursuit, the club finally secured Pep Guardiola, a manager whose specific style of play was central to the club's long-term vision. This appointment coincided with a significant rebranding effort designed to align the club's image with its new era.
This transformation was not without friction. Following a consultation process initiated in October 2015, the club introduced a new badge to replace the 1997 design. While the new logo incorporated elements from other City Football Group teams like New York City FC, it faced criticism for looking 'amateurish' and for removing the words 'Football Club.' Similarly, on 30 June 2016, the club transitioned its digital identity from 'MCFC' to 'ManCity.' While international fans embraced the change, the local Manchester-based core often bristled at the new wording, which they felt mirrored the branding of their rivals.
On the pitch, the season was a rollercoaster of high-stakes drama. In the UEFA Champions League, City navigated a group containing Barcelona, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Celtic. After a heavy 0–4 defeat in Barcelona, they fought back to win 3–1 at home. Their Round of 16 campaign against Monaco provided a cinematic highlight: after trailing 2–3 in the home leg, City scored three unanswered goals to win 5–3. However, the dream ended in the return leg when a late goal by Tiémouém Bakayoko secured Monaco's progression, leaving City to focus on their domestic campaigns in the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
