The 2017 Cleveland Browns: A masterclass in NFL futility
In short: In 2017, the Cleveland Browns achieved something nearly impossible: a perfect 0–16 season. It wasn't just a bad year; it was a historic convergence of injury, losing streaks, and a franchise-record drought that left the team at the very bottom of the league.
The 201s7 season stands as a landmark of professional football failure. By finishing 0–16, the Browns joined the 2008 Detroit Lions as the only two teams to achieve a winless season since the NFL expanded to a 16-game schedule in 1978. Because the league expanded to 17 games in 2021, the 2017 Browns are destined to remain the most recent team to complete a full, winless season. This period was marked by extreme instability, including a 1–31 record over two seasons under head coach Hue Jackson, the worst 32-game stretch in NFL history.
The season's collapse was punctuated by the loss of legendary offensive tackle Joe Thomas. Since 2007, Thomas had played 10,363 consecutive offensive snaps, a streak broken only when a triceps tear during a Week 7 defeat to the Tennessee Titans concluded both his year and his professional playing days. This injury occurred amidst a broader era of decline; the Browns were in the midst of a 25-season drought without a division title and a 15-season postseason drought, the longest in the NFL at the time.
The roster and management underwent massive upheaval. On December 7, 2017, general manager Sashi Brown was replaced by John Dorsey. The coaching staff also saw significant turnover, with defensive coordinator Ray Horton fired in January, followed by a wave of assistant coach departures. By the end of the year, the Browns had extended a losing streak in the AFC North to 17 games and a road losing streak to 2015-era origins, cementing their place in the record books for all the wrong reasons.
