In short: After nearly two decades of frustration, the Cleveland Browns finally returned to the postseason. Led by a new coaching staff and a record-breaking general manager, the team transformed from a 6–10 squad into an 11–5 powerhouse, securing their first winning season since 2007.

The 2020 season marked a massive structural overhaul for the franchise. Following the departure of general manager John Dorsey on December 31, 2019, the team hired Andrew Berry on January 27, 2020. At just 32 years old, Berry became the youngest general manager in NFL history. This leadership change coincided with the hiring of Kevin Stefanski, a former Minnesota Vikings assistant, who took over his first NFL head coaching job on January 13, 2020. The front office changes followed the dismissal of Freddie Kitchens, who had finished his single season as head coach with a 6–10 record. This transition also involved the departure of both the vice president of player personnel and the assistant general manager.

The team's performance on the field saw a dramatic turnaround. After a 6–10 finish in 2019, the Browns finished 2020 with an 11–5 record. This success included their best start since 1994, reaching a 4–1 record and their first four-game winning streak since 2009. This momentum carried them through a 17-year playoff drought, the longest active streak in the league, to reach the postseason for the first time since 2002. This resurgence was bolstered by key roster moves, including the acquisition of running back Duke Johnson from Houston. Additionally, the team secured tight end Wyatt Teller through a trade with Buffalo.

The postseason journey provided both triumph and heartbreak. In the Wild Card Round, Cleveland defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 48–37, marking their first playoff victory since the 1994 season. However, their run ended the following week in the Divisional Round, where they fell 22–17 to the eventual AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs. That defeat stopped the Browns from reaching the AFC Championship for the first time since 1989. The victory over Pittsburgh was a significant milestone for the franchise. However, they ultimately lost to the Chiefs in a close contest.
